Twisted Review’s – 1922
1922 is a 2017 horror/crime film written and directed by Zak Hilditch and starring, Thomas Jane, Molly Parker, Dylan Schmid, and Kaitlin Bernard. Based on a novella by Stephen King.
Initial Thoughts…
When I first discovered this film on Netflix, I had not heard anything thing about it. Curiosity got the best of me and I decided to give it a watch.
The Plot…
In the year 1922, Wilfred is a small town farmer who lives with his wife, Arlette, and their son, Henry. All seems fine until Arlette threatens to leave him, sell the land and take Henry with her. Faced with loosing everything, Wilfred plots with his son to do the unthinkable.
The Characters…
1922 only has a handful of characters, but they are all complex and drive the story forward. The main character is Wilfred, played to perfection by Thomas Jane in his best performance to date. A seemingly simple man with dark intentions, Wilfred is fascinating to watch. Arlette as the fed up wife, Henry as the conflicted son, Shannon as the comited girlfriend, and Harlan as the concerned farther and successful neighbor all add to the story as well.
The Story…
Given that 1922 is a faithful adaptation of a Stephen king novella, it comes as no surprise that the meat of the film comes in the story. It’s dark, complex, and even has a few twists and turns. What starts out as a simple story of a man wanting to murder his wife, turns into a supernatural study of consequences.
Final Thoughts and Grade…
While a casual movie watcher might find 1922 to be boring, a committed horror fan will enjoy this film.
I give 1922 a six out of ten.
Every body have a sick and twisted day. 😉
