A WORD FROM CHRIS NOTARILE:
I don’t really know where the idea for this came from. I just knew I wanted to make a quirky, bright horror movie. Something that takes place during the day, avoiding all the standard troupes we’ve come to expect in horror.
After working with Tess Speranza on several shorts, I’ve come to learn that her skills far surpass the roles I’ve given her. So when I sat down to write SUGAR, I had only her in mind for the main character. I wanted to create something that would explore Tess’ depth and range as an actress and just let her shine.
We shot the whole thing in about 4 hours. This was definitely one of my easier shoots. When your script takes place entirely in one location, things tend to move much quicker when filming. Chris Callaway and Edward Kasper also brought their A-games as cops. Edward is an actual police officer, so this was a definite walk in the park for him.
