THE EXORCIST:
This ones such a classic and still holds up as scary, in my opinion, in this day and age. The mood that this movie sets, the tricks that they play with the lights, and the performances are all so intricately crafted you can’t help but get invested in the story. And also, how can you not love this movie when it’s got such iconic quotes and vomit moments.

SAW:
So this one is a guilty pleasure of mine, as I own all the movies in this franchise on DVD. I like gore in my movies and this franchise definitely has plenty of it. I love how the movies are all connected to each other, in whatever crazy and unique way the writers can think of and I love how the movie finds fun new ways to have people killed. But the first one in the series has to be my absolute favorite. The build up to the twist at the end was out of this world and something that always shocked me. It really kept you on the edge of your seat while also grimacing at the gruesome deaths.

CABIN IN THE WOODS:
I love movies that play with genre and this is definitely one of those movies. It’s meta but in all the best ways. It plays with the tropes of horror films but also honors them and plays upon them to create something unlike any other movie before it has done. Super creative, very fun, equally gory and smart. What else can you ask for in a film?

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY:
I love this franchise as well but the first one will always hold a special place in my heart as I have vivid memories of seeing this at midnight in a packed movie theater with my best friends from college at the time. The way we all jumped and screamed, how people would yell back at the screen, was one of the best ways to experience a scary movie that literally gave me nightmares later that night. It was so simple and yet so effective. This is one of those shows how much greatness you can do with little money.

MISERY:
I am a HUGE Stephen King fan and I could not complete a list if I didn’t at least put one of his movies on this list. It was hard for me to choose between which movie to put on this list and ultimately it was Misery that prevailed. I love Misery because it was my first Stephen King book to movie adaptation that I saw and was blown away by how scary just regular people can be and the lengths they will go to get what they want. Also Kathy Bates. Come on!

THE DESCENT:
This is another one of those films that was simple yet effective in it’s manner of filming and how important mood setting is for a horror film. Your imagination makes you think the worst will happen and with the tight spaces of where the movie takes place you are equally constricted by the fear of something happening to somebody. The performances felt quite raw and that’s what made it that much more frightening. Again another example how less is more sometimes.

SCREAM:
No list is complete without a Wes Craven mention and Scream is my favorite of his (basically the whole franchise). As I already mentioned I love meta and self aware films and this was one of those that started that trend and knew how to do it so well. The quippy lines, the subversion of expectations, the drama, Courtney Cox’s wig in on of the sequels…Scary. You don’t know what to expect and you don’t know who the killer is. Such a fun ride of a film.

GET OUT:
I mean what more is there to say about this film that hasn’t already been said? So creative, so current, so political, yet also still so frightening. Great performances all around and I love a good horror film where most everybody gets their comeuppance. What a great social commentary and I think a film we needed in this day and age. Creative yet also very consistent with horror film tropes but just expands upon them to the best it can be.
