Hellter Interviews Carver director Emily DiPrimio (Carver, Bye Felicia)!!
Hello Grue-Lings,
We have a very young horror director with us today Emily DiPrimio. She got her start in a horror show called Sorrow Hill as The Crying Girl and For Love Of Zombies as Zombie/Barbara. She wrote and directed her first horror segment in a film called Night Shift. The segment she did is Bye Felicia. She wrote and directed her first feature horror slasher film called Carver. She now has a film in post production called Trailer Park Princess. Please welcome the talented Emily DiPrimio:

HELLTER: Whats your favorite Slasher film?
EMILY: My Favorite Slasher film is John Carpenter’s Halloween.

HELLTER: Nice. Whats your favorite horror film?
EMILY: My favorite horror film is Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho.

HELLTER: Wow, impressive. Why are 1980s Slasher films a big influence in your life?
EMILY: I enjoy the genre. Sure there is a basic formula that most of the 80’s slasher films follow but they are fun none the less and I wanted to pay respect to the genre with CARVER while trying to add my own unique spin.

HELLTER: Whats your take on horror movie music?
EMILY: It is vital to have a great score to compliment the visuals. The right score can really accentuate the emotion a film maker is trying to invoke from the audience.

HELLTER: Yeah, the music makes the movie. Whats your favorite prop to use?
EMILY: A scythe of course. That is the weapon our killer uses in Carver.

HELLTER: Very good choice. Can you watch gory scenes without covering your eyes?
EMILY: I love watching the gory scenes. I love practical effects. I watch those scenes so I can figure out how they did it.

HELLTER: The gorier the better In my eyes. Who is your favorite horror character?
EMILY: Norman Bates from Psycho. Creepy and deadly.

HELLTER: Who inspired you to write Carver?
EMILY: I wrote Carver with my father while recovering from reconstructive ankle surgery.

HELLTER: What attracted you to horror?
EMILY: My father is a huge horror movie fan. He is also a film maker and I have been involved with his movies since I was 4 years old so I naturally gravitated to that genre.

HELLTER: Do you have any advice for girls your age or anyone your age interested in directing?
EMILY: Don’t let anyone try and stop you. If you have the desire and the focus make it happen. You are the only person who is stopping you.

HELLTER: Good advice. What made you decide to do kickstarter for your film Carver?
EMILY: After writing Carver I really wanted to make the movie and direct. Not having the money to do so, I decided to go the Kickstarter route and was very fortunate to attract over 500 backers.

HELLTER: Describe what Carver is about?
EMILY: Carver is a horror-mystery movie about a group of high school students that share a horrible secret from Halloween night 8 years ago. Now, someone from their past has left a calling card, a carved pumpkin, at each of their homes. As Halloween night approaches once again, a stranger wearing a familiar pumpkin mask is stepping out of the shadows of their past.

HELLTER: You promised no CGI blood, what do you have in mind to use for blood and why don’t you like cgi gore?
EMILY: We used all practical effects and blood on Carver. This is thanks to our special effects make-up guru John Rattacasa. He has a great blood recipe and that is what we used. I don’t have anything against CGI gore, I just feel it doesn’t look real.

HELLTER: How was it like writing the script for Carver with your dad?
EMILY: It was amazing. I learned so much about story structure and how to write well rounded characters. Writing is a very involved process, one I work hard on every day.

HELLTER: Are you a fan of haunted houses, have you ever been to Eastern State Pennitentary Haunted House? I worked Terror Behind The Walls for 3 years, best time of my life.
EMILY: I’ve never been to Eastern State. I’ve been to Bates Motel and Creamy Acres and they are a lot of fun.

HELLTER: Is the 1980s your favorite decade of horror?
EMILY: I don’t really have a favorite. I love a good horror movie regardless of the decade.

HELLTER: Any other horror films in the works?
EMILY: We just wrapped and edited a web series called Violet. It is produced by horror icon Eli Roth for his Crypt TV web site. I am also currently doing a re-write on two screenplays, one of which I hope to do next.

HELLTER: You acted in 2 horror films, For Love of Zombies and Sorrow Hill. What were your roles?
EMILY: In For Love of Zombies I played a zombie and the bratty little sister of one of the lead characters. Sorrow Hill I played a little girl crying for her mother. Neither one garnered me attention from the Academy.

HELLTER: I read your from philly, do you still reside in philly?
EMILY: I am from South Jersey actually. We tend to get lumped in with Philadelphia because of our proximity. I love Philly but I am a Jersey girl.
